SynopsisWhen Toni, Joseph and Charlie arrive at their new boarding school, they are glad to leave their families - and respective problems - behind. Isolated as boarders, they meet a handsome senior with a personality like iced snake's blood, teachers with a penchant for physical punishment, and four other outcasts who reveal that their being brought to the Academy wasn't random at all. When the arrivals discover that their new school is engaged in "behavior modification" through electric shocks, isolation, restraints, and an ever-evolving set of methods to "fix" them, they declare war on their Academy. During their campaign of sabotage, they fight, hate, scorn, love, and begin to uncover the reasons why they were brought to the school. But as their war against the school escalates beyond their control, will they become the very things the Academy believes they are: dangerous, delinquent - and mad?
ExcerptCHAPTER SEVEN: THE
“Well, we only got a little time left,” Anton said. “You probably got by now that we ain’t really good little school boys and girls. This school brought you all here ’cause they think we’re dangerous, and that means they treat us like we are. Well if they’re gonna blame me for it, I’ma be more danger than they can handle. You people interested?”
Toni could hear her rapid breathing in the silence that followed.
“You already know I am,” Ann said, before looking over at Joseph who nodded.
“Yeah,” he nodded surely, turning to Lieutenant and Anton. “This whole place is wrong. No place should have this much power over people’s lives. I was gonna fight it solo, but workin’ together might be better.”
“What about you Midget?” Ann asked Charlie. “In or out?”
“I’m afraid,” Charlie said. “But — you all don’t — don’t think I’m crazy.”
“Course we do,” Anton said. “We’re just all crazy too, so you fit right in.”
“So I do,” Charlie nodded. “Toni?”
“How bad is it if we get caught?” Toni asked.
“Bad,” Melvin supplied. “But it’ll be bad either way. They once sent me for some shock therapy after I laughed in a school meeting. A whole half hour.”
“I’m scared,” Toni admitted. “I think you’re all a few sandwiches short of a picnic.”
“Few tacos short of a combination plate,” Joseph added helpfully.
“Few Taliban short of a jihad,” Charlie pitched in brightly.
“Oh, too soon,” Anton shook his head, while Lieutenant snorted with laughter.
“They took my cell phone, and touched my clothes,” Toni said decidedly after a minute.
“So now I am royally pissed ... and since I fucked myself over by even coming here, I might as well stick my hand in too.”
“Well, now that we’ve all shared and bonded,” Joseph said pointedly. “What does our little clan plan on doin’ as our first official mission?”
“Well,” Charlie put in, with a dark smile. “I have a few ideas.”
